Deschutes River, Oregon
Guided Fly Fishing for Wild Rainbows and Summer Steelhead
Rugged canyons of the Lower Deschutes River.
The Lower Deschutes River is Oregon's premier trout and steelhead fly water. Nowhere else in the world can an angler find 100 miles of pristine fly water, home to both large native trout and wild summer and fall steelhead.
March through October the Deschutes is alive with rising rainbow trout, locally known as redsides. Several hatches throughout the spring and summer create exciting dry fly fishing opportunities.
August through December the Deschutes hosts an impressive run of summer and fall steelhead. These fish are aggressive to the swung fly, and the river is perfectly suited for two-handed rods and floating lines.
Chris O'Donnell's Guide Service is based in Maupin, Oregon, within the Deschutes River Canyon. From our
doorstep you have access to 100 miles of wild trout and steelhead fly water, including overnight float trips through two remote roadless canyon stretches.
McKenzie style drift boats are used as down river transportation. All fishing is done while wading, as fishing from a floating device is strictly prohibited. The Deschutes offers both easy and difficult wading for all ages and abilities. This unique regulation is one of many contributing factors that has kept the Deschutes such a rich and productive fishery.
Deschutes River Camps
The finest fly fishing opportunities for trout and steelhead on the Lower Deschutes River are most commonly found in the roadless canyon stretches, accessible only by boat. Our three day, two night float trips cover 25 to 45 miles of river, and provide a safe, comfortable, and exciting way to experience the Deschutes. Trout fishing is best on the upper float (Warm Springs to Maupin), while steelhead fishing begins in July on the lower float (Macks Canyon to the Columbia).
